THE SEVRE GALLERY OF FINE ART GLASS FEATURING PRECIOUS HAND CUT AND ENGRAVED ILLUSTRATIONS ON CRYSTAL CLEAR GLASS BY PATTY SEVRE The Artwork you will find in the Gallery is a product of Artist Patty Sevre’s own two hands - 14 Generations of crystal glass cutting knowledge. My family Becker & Brisbois has cut and engraved glass and passed the tradition to succeeding generations over the course of 258 years. Born Patricia Mae Brisbois, Becker in Long Island, New York. I traced my heritage in glass back to Johann Albrecht Becker, who cut glass for The Royal Norwegian Glassworks in Nostetangen, Norway prior to establishing his own workshop in 1773. The book Glass Through The Ages, 1948, Penquin books. Patty learned the family trade from her Grandfather George Becker and Father Victor Charles Brisbois. Patty Sevre is a master of her Art, creating unique and irreplaceable speciments of glass art with little more than revolving wheels, made of stone, copper, and diamond and water cooling the wheels. Clearly, one of the finest practitioners of this rare art form that one will ever see. Every aspect of her work is freehand and requires a remarkable keen eye and sure hand. With the exception of a lathe fitted with wheels. Patty has to shape and sharpen her own wheels a trade in it –self, flat cut sharp edge, a fine miter point, and a concave rounded shape. All varied to whatever cut she want’s to make in the design. Patty uses no other aid in the birth of her exceptional creations. Study the superb engravings by Patty and behold the quality, value and desirable nature of her work. Kenneth Sevre my husband is a big part of our business, he love,s engraving, and working with stained glass door’s and window’s with hand engraving’s . Ken and I do Hot Glass Tourch work, together, glass blowing, and fused glass work. We teach Glass engraving and sell the lathe and wheels. FAMILY HISTORY 1773 TO 2009AS THE WHEELS TURNED. It all started with Johann Albrech Becker a German born in Louis Lorraine, the wooded country south of the Vosges. He was a Lotheringian, which is sometimes applied to those who were neither German or Dutch. The Royal Norwegian Glass Works employed Johann Albrech Becker, a Lotheringian, in Nostetagen. The Royal Glass Works was on the water Communications to the sea. The Norwegian Factory established at Notectagen in 1741 was the first to operate in the Danish – Norwegian Kindom under its patron Christian VI of Denmark. German glass workers were engaged to work at Nostetagen Factory to engrave glassware. This same Factory employed the Irish glass workers to Cut the Deep Brilliant Cut Glassware. This is how my family learned the Rich Brilliant Cut Glass Trade, at this factory. Johann Albrech Becker engraved goblets and bowls, German style but angle- Venetian design came from Nostetagen Glass Works. Johann Albrech Becker engraved good quality crystal at this factory and was a excellent engraver with the Bohemain style. Nostetagen Glass Works closed down in 1777 and all the artist worked on their own account. Johann Becker made himself independent in 1773 with a workshop and established trade in Bragermes and he was a competent engraver but not known to have signed any of his work. Johann Albrech Becker died about 1807. My father Victor Charles died in 1968 and my grandfather died in 1970. I am Patricia Brisbois , Becker, Sevre and still keep the wheels turning and cut fine art work. Over the last 50 years I have cut special orders for Tiffany & Co., Shreve Crump & Low, Boston, Ma. And many Gift stores all over these United States and did consultant work teaching the fine art of glass cutting and designed the lathe for turning the wheels. Now I hand carve Peoples Portraits in glass, awards, corporate gifts, logos and any kind of art work because crystal is my canvas. I enjoy it not because of just the art but for the History of it, and about my Family. I thank GOD who gave me the family background and the talent and the persistence to work and pass the art on. God is good. |
